Douglas
David is an artist of Nuu-chah-nulth, Dakota and Sioux descent, who was
born in Seattle in December of 1971 to Joe David and Sandra Tuifua (nee
Parry). Born to two fine artists, Douglas has been artistically inclined
his whole life. Though his father gave him carving instructions before
the age of ten, it was actually his mother who introduced him to selling
his work. Together they would make trips to the Pike Place Market and
sell their work on the outdoor slabs. Around this same time, they began
doing street fairs and attending Pow-wows. This involved a lot of traveling
and as a family they all had responsibilities to make sure a weekend went
smoothly. These early years taught Douglas much about the business side
of art. Having spent most of his life with his mother, Douglas worked
frequently in her Dakota Style.
